Our nonprofit struggles to recruit and retain volunteers to help with our community events and activities, can we offer financial incentives or other “perks” as a recruiting tool?
Reimbursing reasonable out-of-pocket expenses for volunteers is permitted, but if an organization gives anything of value in exchange for volunteer service (items of de minimis value excepted), then it can quickly (and inadvertently) convert “volunteers” into employees and trigger a variety of legal and tax compliance issues.  Click here for more discussion and a few tips to avoid trouble while trying to recruit and retain committed volunteers for your organization.
