Should a Lawyer Review My Employment Agreement Before I Sign?

QUESTION: My boss just handed me an employment agreement and wants me to sign it ASAP, why spend the time and money to have a lawyer review it?

ANSWER: Generally speaking, courts in Virginia will hold people to the contracts they voluntarily sign.  Therefore, it is important that you understand the terms and conditions of any contract you sign.

Your career—including your ability to pursue your chosen profession—could be significantly affected by signing a written employment agreement.

In addition, never miss an opportunity to assert whatever bargaining leverage you might have to negotiate a better deal.

The golden rule of contract negotiations—it never hurts to ask!  Be realistic, but don’t sell yourself short either.  Negotiating a better deal and understanding what you are signing are two things with which an experienced business attorney can offer valuable assistance.
